There is a high degree of congruence between the demand for talent at Hainan Free Trade Port and the demand for the Harrow Haikou Scholarship Programme.

This issue features Dr. Ahmed Hussain, Chief Education Officer of AISL Harrow, who explains how we can nurture our children to become global talents in an international free trade port.

如果你想成为奖学金获得者， 我会以哈罗的核心价值观来评判你的表现，即勇气、荣誉、谦和、互助，以及你能在学术或者专业领域达到多高的水准。

首先，我们可以看看哈罗海口奖学金分为全奖，半奖和荣誉奖学金，每一项奖学金都对相应的申请者提出不同的要求。

如果你想申请全奖或者半奖，你需要具备优秀的学术能力或者在某一领域有极高的天赋。你可能是一个有天赋的孩子，一个可能在数学和科学、艺术、体育方面有所成就的人。

这意味着你能在团队中表现出谦和的品质，你能够开放地听取他们意见，要用于表达，你还必须表现出“互助”，你必须是团队的一员，而且是领导者的角色，你能够鼓励、团结同学在运动场上或是在舞台上一起拼搏，也能在小组内解决问题。你有重要的兴趣爱好，有对科学、艺术、体育等领域的期望与决心。这就是我们要寻找的——不仅仅是有才华的人，而是有才华并践行我们价值观的人。

中国的家庭非常重视教育，这也给了我们一个与家长密切合作机会。以便他们了解我们做什么，我们是如何做的，我们如何帮助我们的学生提高双语能力，例如，我们在数学上做了什么？——取中国国家课程之长，帮助学生的数学能力超出预期，教授他们如何高效学习的方法并将其应用到更高层次。 在一个如此地重视教育机会的沃土上，我们发现中国的学生更有动力，更投入学习，他们更渴望成功。 而我们要做的就是如何释放他们的能力。

 学科与英语深度结合，推动学生在专业学科交流时使用英语的能力。

我们对中国教育的了解之一是现代知识非常丰富。中国教育非常擅长寻找学习方法，哈罗可以以此为基础，将哈罗教育建立在知识丰富的中国教育体系之上。 比如，那些从中国本地的教育系统，转入哈罗高年级的学生可能会特别擅长某些学科。我们要做的是在此基础上，持续增强他们的学科长处，并和语言联系起来。不仅是推动英语学习，而是推动他们在专业学科交流时使用英语的能力。

把学科知识和英语结合，这是很难的。而我们所有的学生都需要锻炼、并掌握这项技能。所以，有明确的证据表明，学生在哈罗花的时间越多，进步就越大。因为这是在同一知识上中文和英语双倍学习的挑战。这侧面增加了学生的学习时间，增强了学习的厚度。

同时，何迈德博士向我们提出，“我们的学生要面对我们现在无法预想到的未来，因此我们必须培养他们具备一些不受时代变化影响的能力，即培养学生的思辨能力、解决问题的能力、创新能力、适应能力、通用技能、双语能力等。

学生在为国际资格考试做准备时，他们需要以一种非常不同的方式使用知识，并将知识应用于现实生活问题，进行开放式探究，进行推理和论证，开展答案不唯一的探究性学习，这与中国当地教育体系有很大不同。

If you wish to be considered for a scholarship, we will assess your performance against Harrow's core values of Courage, Honour, Humility, Fellowship, and the standard you can achieve in your academic or professional field.

Firstly, we know that there are full, half and honorary scholarships, each of which has different requirements for the respective applicants.

If you want to apply for a full or half scholarship, you will need to have the excellent academic ability or be extremely talented in a particular area.

You may be someone who has achieved excellence in mathematics and science, art, or sport.

That means that you show the quality of Humility, that you can be open to the opinions of others and are willing to express your own. And it also means that you show Fellowship. You are part of our community, and you are a leader who can encourage and unite your peers on the sports field or on the stage and be able to solve problems as part of a team. We expect you to have your own interests and aspiration in the field of science, art, and sport. This is what we are looking for – 

not just somebody who is talented, but somebody who is talented and lives out our core values.

Families in China value education very highly and this gives us an opportunity to work closely with parents, so that they understand what we do, how we do it, and how we help our students improve their bilingual skills. For example, what do we do in mathematics? We take the strengths of the Chinese National Curriculum and help our students to exceed expectations in mathematics, teaching them how to learn effectively and apply them to higher levels. In a land where educational opportunities are so valued, we find that Chinese students are more motivated, more engaged in their learning, and they are more eager to succeed. And all we can do is how to unleash their abilities.

Subject learning is deeply integrated with English to promote the ability of students to use English when communicating in their specialist subjects.

One of the things we know about Chinese education is that it is very good at finding ways to learn, and Harrow can use this as a basis for building a Harrow education on top of the Chinese education system. For example, students who transfer to Harrow Upper School from a local Chinese school may be particularly good at certain subjects. What we want to do is build on this and continue to enhance their subject strengths and link them to language learning. Not just to improve these students' English language skills, but to promote their ability to use English when communicating in their specialist subjects.

It is difficult to combine subject knowledge with English language learning. And all our students need to develop and master this skill. So, there is clear evidence that the more time students spend at Harrow, the more progress they make. This is because it is a double challenge to learn the same knowledge in both Chinese and English. This indirectly increases the amount of time students spend studying and enhances the depth of learning.

At the same time, Dr. Ahmed Hussain suggested to us that our students have to face a future that we cannot envisage now, and therefore we have to equip them with competencies that are not affected by the changing times, i.e. developing students' critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, creativity, adaptability, transferable skills, and the bilingual ability.

As students prepare for international examinations, they are required to use what they learnt in a very different way and then apply it to real-life problems, engage in open-ended inquiry, and undertake reasoning and argumentation. Such inquiry-based learning is still very different from the approach offered by the local Chinese education system.

At last, I want to say that Harrow Haikou Scholarship Programme has provided opportunities for a wide range of students. We also benefit from a much more personalized approach to education, small class size and very low staff-to-student ratios of 1:4. We hope to help our students fulfil their deepest potential and unlock it, allowing them to turn interests into passions, then passions into genuine talent, and talent into high performance.

如果我挑出我在哈罗海口观察到的三件事，最让我印象深刻的事情就是英语水平。

上次来访时，我发现学生的数学很强，也有很多在体育和艺术方面非常优秀的学生。现在最令我最惊讶的是学生的英语脱颖而出，哈罗小学大多数的学生英语阅读水平与7岁或以上的英语母语学生相当。

第二点是关于学生所拥有的信心，学生能够自信地向来访学校的成年人介绍学校和交谈的信心。—— 这是环境的结果，即第三点。 很显然，学生在一个安全、充满关爱和滋养的环境中学习，这使他们能够敢于冒险，培养勇气，尝试并以持续不断进步。

因此，我认为英语竞争力、学生学习的环境和学生所拥有的自信心这三个词关系非常密切，也是哈罗海口令人惊喜的提升。

If I pick out three things I’ve observed, the one thing that struck me immediately is the students’ English level. During my last visit, I found our students excel in mathematics and we have some incredibly strong students in sports and the arts. But now, what struck me is the development of their English level. Most of the Pre-Prep students read English at a level comparable to that of native English speakers aged 7 or above.

The second point is the confidence our students have. They can talk to and be with an adult that comes and visits the school confidently. And I believe that’s a consequence of the environment they are learning. And that’s the third point. When students are learning in a secure, caring and nurturing environment that allows them to take risks, develop their courage, to try and improve in a sustained way.

Therefore, I believe that the three words – English, learning, the environment in which students learn and confident students – are closely related. This has led to amazing progress at Harrow Haikou.
