Private Life
This is an amazingly written book that shows us how the small things we take for granted in our lives have come to be so ubiquitous. Bill Bryson's writing style wanders all throughout history, and keeps us interested in even what seems to be mundane details. It's an immensely satisfying book, and one that will make you stop every five minutes to say "Oh, that's why!"

The tale successfully describes a character Scrooge who is rich in materials but poor in spirit. Scrooge is a miser, greedy and mean in every way. He spends all day in his counting house looking after his money but is so stingy that he keeps his house in darkness, his fire small and allows no extravagance even on Christmas day. However, we soon learn that he is the most impoverished character – he is lacking love, warmth and the spirit of Christmas, all of which make lives like Bob Cratchit’s so worth living despite their proverty and hardships. The story makes us reflect what kind of person we want to be.

Educated is a memoir by the American author Tara Westover. Westover recounts overcoming her survivalist Mormon family in order to go to college, and emphasizes the importance of education in enlarging her world. While lacking any formal education until the age seventeen, Tara later obtained many outstanding academic achievements, earning an MPhil from Trinity College, Cambridge in 2009, and was awarded a PhD in history from Cambridge in 2014. Her unremitting efforts to strengthen herself in the pursuit of knowledge touched me deeply. Her life is what I would call a hard-earned legend.

The author of this book, Scott, a famous American psychologist, tells with a very sincere attitude the common thinking and revision of modern society: self-discipline, love, faith, and kindness. What impressed me most was that the author emphasized the importance of constant self-correction. Life is a difficult journey, and the journey of mental maturity is quite long. Growing up does not necessarily mean becoming mature. We should constantly improve our cognitive map, open up new maps, and learn the courage and ability to love themselves and others. This is a great book to read when growing up!
