Why Play Matters at NAIS Pudong - 为什么玩中学在早期教育中如此重要

Inspired by the latest Nord Anglia INSIGHTS article exploring why the Early Years are the most important years of a child’s education, we know that a child’s most significant learning happens in the early years—in ways that are not always immediately visible. (Click "Read More" to view the original article.)

Diane Vaughan

Reflecting on the article, NAIS Pudong Principal, Diane Vaughan, has this to say about the importance of early learning: “Every moment from entering our school our children are learning, whether that be academically, linguistically, socially or emotionally.  What feels like play to young children – and what can look like play to parents – is actually a carefully coordinated series of activities linked to variety of core skills and development. From our recent Parent Survey results, our Early Years Department specifically earned a world beating rating, so we know that our parents understand what we are doing is right for our youngest students."

In our Early Years classrooms, you’ll see a range of themed activities, arts & crafts, phonics work, music and dance, group work, communication tasks and much more, all linked directly to the core elements of the Early Years Foundation Stages (EYFS) which is a critical backbone of our offering.

Marushka Bunce

Early Years Lead, Mrs Marushka Bunce, supports the Principal’s thoughts, highlighting one of the many play-based activities we have within the teaching and learning spaces: “Just one example of students learning while playing would be at the water table.  Not only does this kind of activity develop vocabulary (‘water’, ‘splash’, ‘warm’, ‘cold’, ‘wet’), but it also helps children to understand textures (how does water feel and move?) and concepts (the links between ice, water and steam).  Further, this kind of activity simultaneously supports communication and social skills (taking turns, helping each other with activities) and elements of self-development (tidying up, wearing aprons etc).  Every activity is professionally developed and supported by our amazing Early Years staff, all of whom care deeply about every student in their care.”
